Discover the Sauerland on vacation

The most famous towns in the Sauerland - and also those that are particularly suitable for a day trip - are:

Winterberg - 14 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Winterberg is a popular destination in both summer and winter. In winter, it is an inviting ski resort that is also internationally renowned for the St. Georg ski jump and the bobsleigh run. In the warmer months, the Sauerland town attracts visitors with its numerous hiking and cycling routes, such as the Rothaarsteig, which lead over the surrounding mountains. Winterberg has also become a real highlight for active holidaymakers in recent years. A wide range of leisure activities - from action golf to fly lines - ensures that there is never a dull moment here.

Willingen - 42 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Although, strictly speaking, it is no longer in Sauerland, Willingen is somehow still part of it. Strictly speaking, Willingen is part of Upland, which is already part of the Rothaargebirge and is located in northern Hesse. Just like Winterberg, Willingen is a well-known winter sports resort, which also has an international reputation thanks to the Mühlkopfschanze, a venue for the annual FIS Ski Jumping World Cup. Just like Winterberg, it has established itself as a great destination for activities and for visiting restaurants and bars in the warmer months.

Schmallenberg - 43 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Historic half-timbered towns and numerous beautiful hiking trails make Schmallenberg a popular destination for keen hikers. And there is also plenty to discover here for those interested in culture: Schmallenberg's town center is a listed building and invites you to admire the facades of the houses during a relaxing stroll.

Möhnesee - 76 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Named after the Möhestausee reservoir built at the beginning of the 20th century, the town is now a popular excursion destination on hot summer days. Affectionately known as the "Westphalian Sea", the reservoir has a shoreline length of 40 kilometers. Whether cycling and hiking around the lake or swimming and water sports on and in the lake: active vacationers will definitely get their money's worth here.

Meschede - 53 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Cosy cafés in Meschede invite you to enjoy a break from the town's attractive shopping opportunities. For this reason alone, many Sauerlanders are drawn to Meschede. If you want to combine your trip with a bit of culture, take the opportunity to visit the St. Walburga parish church and its treasury or the town's landmark, the Friedenskirche church on the Klosterberg. The Hennesee lake in particular is clearly associated with Meschede for holidaymakers, offering many leisure opportunities - on the water and on land.

Medebach - 19 minutes by car from Hallenberg

The sun shines a lot here: Medebach is the town with the most hours of sunshine in NRW. The reason for this is its location in the rainforest of the Rothaargebirge. Gentle hills adorn the landscape of Medebach, and the "Medebach Bay" bird sanctuary with its rare animal and plant species is a popular excursion destination.

Warstein - 56 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Many may only know it as a beer brand, but Warstein also has a lot to offer in terms of scenery. A picturesque meadow landscape and gentle hills characterize Warstein. No wonder the town and its surroundings are popular with hikers and cyclists.

Bestwig - 43 minutes by car from Hallenberg

Marching water - Bestwig is home to the highest original waterfall in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Plästerlegge. A large part of Bestwig is now a nature reserve and landscape conservation area. For this reason, Bestwig is also very popular with hikers and cyclists.
